Waihī Beach Lifeguard Represents Region at Youth Leadership Camp

Young Waihī Beach lifeguard Byron McIntyre has returned from the Northern Region Youth Development Camp with new skills, greater confidence, and a stronger sense of leadership in surf lifesaving.

Held on Motutapu Island near Auckland, the annual camp brings together surf lifeguards and patrol supporters aged 15 to 17 for a weekend of leadership, teamwork and personal growth.

Byron was the only candidate  from the Eastern Region, joining 60 young lifeguards from across the upper North Island for a challenging programme designed to build confidence and resilience.

The weekend began with a rainy 3km walk to the dorms before participants tackled snorkelling, kayaking, a ropes course, and group problem-solving tasks. There were also a few surprises, including a 1am wake-up and overnight challenges that tested how the group worked together under pressure.

Byron said the camp pushed him out of his comfort zone at times, but was also a lot of fun. He came away with practical leadership skills, greater confidence, and a deeper appreciation for teamwork.

He was also inspired by the camp leaders and said he would love to return one day in a leadership role himself.

Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services says Byron’s selection reflects the strength of the club’s young members and the important role surf lifesaving plays in helping rangatahi build confidence, responsibility and community-minded leadership.
